Trail Ramblings: What’s On Your Wish List?

Projects Coming Up.

There are a number of trail and bike infrastructure projects from the 2024 City of Lincoln Trails Report https://www.lincoln.ne.gov/files/sharedassets/public/v/2/parks-amp-rec/trails/2024-city-of-lincoln-trail-report-web.pdf that are still waiting in the wings. Some have been finished and are in use, but there are a couple of others I’d like to mention just because they happened to be on my radar recently. One is the Beal Slough Trail. If you want to get from the area around 70th and Yankee Hill to the bike underpass on 56th between Pine Lake and Old Cheney, this is what you need to take. I can see it being an important bike corridor in the future. I decided to check up on it recently, and rode on part of the proposed trail from the bike underpass under Pine Lake to the other end where it will connect to the trail under 56th. From Yankee Hill I took the neighborhood streets to the Pine Lake underpass. This area along Beal Slough is also an award winning disc golf course, according to the city’s website. I don’t know how the trail will interface with it, but the dirt “trail” is bikeable, and I saw tracks that told me others ride it too.

From the 2024 trail report

The small, steep, temporary bridge towards the north end that crosses the creek isn’t really rideable, at least with a commuter bike and a load.. Nearby to the north sits the permanent bridge which has been waiting ten or so years for the project to catch up to be installed. I believe there was an issue with railroad right of way which has since been resolved. It will be a beautiful trail.

The other proposed trail I wanted to mention is the one I get the most inquiries about. It’s the West “O” street trail. It was supposed to be built this year I believe, but I haven’t heard anything about it lately. I don’t recommend riding West “O”, so getting to and from Airpark or the businesses along the highway is still a challenge. You can go the long way north of the airport and connect to the Highlands Trail to the North First street trail.
