The Lincoln City Council addressed the ongoing lack of clarity of terms and regulations of e-bikes, e-motos, e-scooters at Monday’s city council meeting. We all know that the proliferation of multi-modal transportation options has outpaced regulations and education. Of course if everyone on the trails acted in a responsible manner, we wouldn’t need increased regulations and education. Anyone using the trails however, knows that that’s not the case, whether it be by roller bladers, regular bicyclists, or dog walkers, there are those who don’t take other trail users into consideration and ride too fast or recklessly, don’t announce their pass, or block the trail. The emphasis on education must be followed up by clarity on what’s allowed and not allowed, with some enforcement, though there will never be enough police on bikes for that to be the major means of compliance. The police also struggle with definitions of what’s legal and what’s not, and where. On the trails, nothing over 750 watts, or e motos, are legal, but types 1,2,3 e bikes with working pedals are. On the bicycle tourism support front, we hosted a Warm Showers couple this week who are taking five years off to tour the world by bike. It’s always a lot of fun to meet touring cyclists, hear about their experiences, and compare notes. Lincoln sits on one of the trans-continental routes preferred by these travelers. I expect their numbers will only increase as more through-trails are developed.
